šŗ How She Became a Data Analyst by Blogging (Megan Bowers)
Iām writing this 21,000 feet in the airāon a bird headed to Hawaii. But Iām still writing you this week because itās THAT important.
In today job market, being better at SQL, Python, or Power BI isnāt getting you the job.
Because every job application has 500+ applicants.
With that many applicants, they donāt even know how good at SQL. They donāt even know you. Heck, a human doesnāt even look at your resume.
If youāve applied for 100+ jobs with only rejections, thereās a good chance those all came from a computer.
To get hired, you must be seen by a human.
But how?
Well you can try to get referrals by doing informational interviews like I talked about in a previous episode.
But another approach is to just yell to the public, āI am smart and can do cool things.ā
This is called blogging.
And itās exactly how Megan Bowers landed her first data job.
She didnāt really have any data experience & knew sheād have to stand out in the job hunt somehow.
She started blogging.
Creating content.
Whatever you want to call it.
She just documented what she was learning.
Learn something new. Blog.
Solve a problem. Blog.
Do a project. Blog.
And people started to read.
At first, it was just a few people here and there. But pretty soon, thousands were reading her articles.
One of those readers was a hiring manager looking to expand his team.
They were impressed with her tech skills, but more importantly her communication skills.
The rest is history.
Thatās the thing, you donāt need 1000ās of readers.
You just need 1 right reader.
And that, may change your life.
Listen to Meganās full story.
p.s. I think one of the keys about making this work is blogging with a publication with existing traffic. Iām debating starting my own data publication especially for people like you. If you want to get on the interest list, fill this form.
