About Me

👋 Hey there! I'm Avery Smith. I'm a chemical lab technician turned data analyst and I'm the founder of Data Career Jumpstart.

2015: I Hated My Job

I studied Chemical Engineering in college. I landed a lab technician position. And hated it.

  • I had to work in person.

  • I was underpaid & undervalued.

  • I had to wear a white coat, gloves, and goggles.

  • I as bored out of my mind.

I knew I had to get OUT of my current career & into something I actually enjoy.

That's when I discovered data & was HOOKED.

2016: My Data Journey

So I started doing as much research as I could. I read ever blog. I watched every YouTube video. I read every book.

Everyone was telling me I needed to learn something different....

"Learn SQL!", "No, start with SQL!", "Before you begin you have to know Linear Algebra & Calculus!"

I was so confused. I felt like a chicken running around with its head chopped off.

2016: Landing My First Data Job

After learning some skills, I tried to land a data job but struggled. But on the side, I built a project for my boss at work that analyzed some data.

I show my boss & he loved it so much, he asked me to do more analysis.

Eventually, he offered me a new title of Jr Data Analyst. Mission accomplished!

2018 - 2021: ExxonMobil

I ended up working in Data Analytics for ExxonMobil in Houston, Texas.

I analyzed oil refinery data in SQL, Excel, Python, Power BI, & Tableau.

I built a tool the company valued at $300M+ & won a company-wide analytics competition.

2021 - Present: Consultant & Career Coach

In 2021, I quit my corporate job & started my own consulting company and Data Career Jumpstart.

I've consulted with Harley Davidson, the Utah Jazz, MIT, Aspen Tech, and many more.

And I've had the chance to educate 1,000+students in the data space.

And I hope to help you as well!
