He chose a proven roadmap

Mason, like many of you, was in a job he didn't enjoy. He was a middle-school choir teacher. And between the crazy students, the strict administration, the early mornings, and late nights - he was done. He wanted a new job ASAP.

Mason's first step towards a data analyst role was simply doing his hobby; singing in a choir. That's where he met Erin Shina. If you've been a reader of The Data Career Newsletter for awhile, you'll recognize that name.

Erin was a music therapist who pivoted to data analytics after going through The Data Analytics Accelerator.

Mason found Erin's pivot fascinating. He always loved numbers and stories. So he asked if they could grab coffee so he could learn more about the role and the journey.

They met. Erin explained everything. And Mason decided he wanted to become a Data Analyst!

Mason also decided he wanted to do it quickly, and do it right. He didn't want to waste time. Why fix something that wasn't broken? He literally decided to steal Erin's exact journey. He joined The Accelerator, got to work building projects, and applying to jobs.

He focused on in-person & hybrid roles

95% of people want a remote job. But the truth is, only 15% of data analyst jobs are remote. 95% of applicants fighting for 15% of the jobs is a recipe for disaster.

Mason learned this and decided to focus on in-person and local hybrid jobs instead. He knew he was already fighting an uphill battle and wanted to do everything to stack the odds back in his favor.

By choosing local jobs, he cut the application competition in a tenth. Less people to compete with, much easier to stand out.

And yet, the job he ended up landing is hybrid, but only 1 day / week in the office. AKA 80% remote.

He was irrationally confident

Three weeks into the program, Mason started applying to job seriously.

He didn't care he wasn't ready. He had "a healthy dose of delusion". He figured he would never feel 100% ready to apply to jobs, so why wait?

Most of the time he didn't hear back, or he got rejected. But that was expected. He was a music major who had only worked as a teacher. His only experience was the 3 projects he had built in his bootcamp.

And yet, he applied over and over again.

He applied to over 80 jobs without much success. But undeterred, he continued until he heard back from the 24th job he applied for.

It was the application he sent at the place Erin worked! She had even agreed to be his referral. He landed the interview, and then the offer.

Steal Mason's Roadmap

Follow a proven roadmap, focus on local jobs, and confidently apply to jobs: these are 3 of the secrets to landing a data job from scratch in 2026.

You can do these 3 things as well. Mason will tell you he's nothing special. He's an ordinary guy like you and me. You can do it, just like him.

I'll also mention a fourth ingredient in Mason's story: luck.

Mason got lucky. He got lucky Erin was at choir practice. He's lucky that Erin was willing to meet with him. He was lucky Erin's company was hiring. Luck played a big role.

But also...Mason created his own luck. He took massive action that led to him being lucky:

He was going to social things like choir practice.
He was talking about his career journey in social settings.
He was brave enough to join The Accelerator.
He was delusional enough to apply for data jobs.
He was dedicated enough to build projects.
