๐ค I Asked DeepSeek How to Become a Data Analyst (It scared me)
Have you heard of DeepSeek yet? I honestly hadn't until it tanked the stock market $969 billion in late January.
It's a Chinese equivalent of ChatGPT, but it's more light-weight, 100% free, and has built-in "thinking capabilties." That sounded cool so I had to test it out.
I decided to ask it, "How do I become a data analyst?" The results shocked me. Here's what it said ๐
"By combining skills, projects, and networking, youโll position yourself strongly for a data analyst role. Start small and stay consistent."
Hmmm, wait a second....skills, projects, networking. That sound familiar, right? The SPN Method!
I talked about what the SPN Method is in this article here. It's my signature method to land a data job. It basically says you need more than skills to get hired. You need a project portfolio, and you need a network. And they're all equally important!
I honestly think it scraped my YouTube, or the audio podcast, or my website. Or something. It freaked me out.
Things it got right:
๐ "Maybe Python/R?" It suggested to maybe hold off on Python & R till later, which I agree with.
๐ "A background in math, stats, or CS helps, but it's not mandatory"
๐ธ Suggested having a personal website like GitHub Pages to build your portfolio. I like Carrd more than GitHub Pages now.
Things it got wrong:
๐ฐ "Freelance to gain experience." Meh. I don't agree here. Freelancing is very hard to get into.
๐ Boring Projects. It suggested projects like analyzing COVID data. Don't do that. Been done 10,000 x already.
๐ "Start to apply to jobs after 6 montths." Ahhhh. This one made me mad. You don't need to wait 6 months to start applying. Apply today. Don't wait.
This is AI in a nutshell...
This is how AI goes. Some things, it gets right. Some things, it gets wrong. Like really, really, really wrong. And it takes human expertise to know when it's wrong.
This is why having a mentor and a proven path is still a great idea. I'd love to be your mentor and give you a step-by-step path in The Accelerator. See you there soon?
