Daliana Lui discussing career advancement strategies on a podcast, highlighting key skills not taught in school.

🚀 How to 10x Your Data Career (ex-Amazon data scientist Daliana Liu)

February 12, 20251 min read

I had Daliana Lui on my podcast this week. She’s an ex-Amazon Senior Data Scientist with 292,000 LinkedIn followers. Kinda a big deal.

The thing she said that surprised me the most?

“Growing your technical skills only gets you so far, especially later in your career. Eventually, it’s your communication, leadership, and persuasion skills that grow your career.”

Then, she gave us this epic 4-piece of advice:

  1. Get immediate feedback on your work projects

  2. Make sure you understand your domain well

    • side note: Daliana had a big soccer project at Amazon, but knew nothing about it so she watched 48 straight hours of soccer matches to learn 🤣

  3. Share your work to grow your visibility

  4. Tie your work back to the business (money made, lives rescued, time saved, etc)

And although that’s aimed more towards people looking to land senior roles…

The same applies to all of us who are looking for our just data job:

  • Get feedback on your resume and projects quickly (don’t wait 6 months)

  • Learn about different data domains (financial, healthcare, sales, product, etc)

  • Share your projects so recruiters start to reach out to you

  • Make sure your effort is ACTUALLY getting you closer to a data job

Here's a quick win that you can do in the next 30 seconds....

Just make a DataFairy account. It'll help you do a report on your latest data project so you can share it with recruiters and hiring managers.
