How a Construction Worker Landed a Senior Data Role (Without Applying)

December 23, 20253 min read

Most people think landing a data job works like this:

Learn the skills. Apply to 50 jobs. Wait for replies. Get rejected again and again. Maybe get lucky, but probably not.

Here’s the cool thing: there’s a different strategy - one that actually works.

One where recruiters DM you first. Where companies apply to YOU. Where you never even fill out the job application.

It sounds fake, but it’s not. I watched one of my students do it.

Let me tell you what happened.

The Job Hunt Reversal

One of my students was working in construction. His name's Jordan. He was estimating costs for apartment buildings. Not exactly a tech job.

He had an MBA. Tried to land an analyst role after graduation. Didn't work out.

Fast forward a bit. He joins my program. He built projects, posted them, and showed up on LinkedIn.

Then something wild happened. A recruiter slid into his DMs.

They wanted him for a senior financial analyst role. Jordan read the job description and thought "Wow! I'm not qualified for this at all."

But the recruiter kept pushing. "You're a great fit."

30 minutes after his first recruiter screen, the company wanted an interview. The next day, he interviewed. No technical questions. And a week later, he had the job.

Senior title. 5 weeks PTO. Hybrid schedule. 12 minutes from home.

Jordan didn't have the perfect background. He had something better.

And you can have it too.

So What Made Jordan Different?

1. He used his "no-data-experience" background as a weapon

Hiring managers are looking for someone who already understands their world.

If a company works in real estate, they’d rather hire a data beginner who understands the industry and market than a data expert who has no clue how houses are built, financed, or priced.

The company isn’t looking for a data expert. They are looking for someone who can help them make better construction decisions based on data.

Jordan had spent years estimating building costs. That experience was gold to a the construction telecom company who ended up hiring him.

Your past isn't baggage. It's your unfair advantage.

And most beginners never even use it. Or use it incorrectly.

2. He made LinkedIn work for him

Jordan didn’t treat LinkedIn like a resume. He treated it like a portfolio.

He posted projects. Wrote articles. Commented on other people's content. Showed he could actually DO the work.

So when a recruiter searched for candidates, Jordan wasn’t just “another profile.” He already proved he could do the work.

His profile became a recruiter magnet.

3. He said yes even when he felt unqualified

This part matters the most. Jordan almost talked himself out of the job. He didn’t feel ready or qualified. But he said yes anyway.

But here's what he learned:The hiring manager who rejects you the most is yourself.

Companies don't expect you to be perfect. They expect you to show up, prove you can learn, and fit their culture.

Jordan’s interviews had zero technical questions. They just wanted to know if he was cool to work with.

The portfolio and background did the heavy lifting.

And he got the job.

Do This and Recruiters Will Find You

Stop mass-applying and start positioning yourself.

Here’s the play:

→ Build 3 to 5 real projects that prove you can use Excel, SQL, and a visualization tool. Show you can solve problems, not just follow tutorials.

→ Post your work on LinkedIn. Talk about what you learned. Comment on other people’s posts. Stay visible so recruiters can actually find you.

→ Fix your profile so it works for you. Use the right keywords. Add your projects. Make it clear what niche you understand.

→ Stay open to hybrid roles. Jordan works remote on Mondays and Fridays. Hybrid isn’t a downgrade. It’s a cheat code.

→ And most important: use your background as your angle. Jordan’s construction experience made him the perfect hire. Your past experience does the same thing. Your niche is the thing that makes you stand out.
